 Virus Prevention and Protection 

A virus is a program that attaches itself to any email, document and program.  When a person opens email, file or runs a program, undesirable effect happens-- such as messing up data, annoying messages displaying on screen, and even erasing floppy disk or hard drive completely.  Viruses can be transmitted to any computer through a network or a removable disk, (floppy or Zip disk).  Anyone who uses a computer should be concerned with viruses.  For more information and updates on viruses visit http://www.symantec.com/avcenter

Academic Technology now can provide faculty, staff and students a copy of Symantec Norton Anti-Virus software on office and home PC’s.

Exception:  Students who no longer attend Gallaudet University, must uninstall their copy of Norton Anti-Virus from their pc's.


How to get Norton Anti-Virus installed on your PC

There are 2 ways to get Norton Anti-Virus installed on your Office or Personal PC

1.     For all institutionally-owned (Gallaudet-owned) computers, you may submit a request to the HelpDesk via the web, email, phone, fax or walk-in

2.      For all personally-owned computers, you may bring your PC/laptop to HMB W121-A, for installation or stop by the HelpDesk, located in the Student Academic Center 1100, and pick up a Gallaudet Standard Software (GSS) loanable CD, and install yourself.  The CD must be returned within 2 business days.

How to check your PC for Viruses

Norton Anti-Virus can scan your PC for any new viruses you might contract on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis

1.       Start

2.      Programs

3.      Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition

4.      Select Scan from your menu

5.      On the 'Scan Computer' screen, select your Local Drive , then select Scan

6.      If any viruses are found, they will be quarantined.

7.      Next, select View from your menu, then quarantine.

8.      Click upon each file, if any, then select Delete.

How to schedule your PC to Scan for Viruses

If you have Norton Anti-Virus installed on your PC, you can set up an automatic scan that will review your PC for any viruses.

1.         Start

2.      Programs

3.      Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition

4.      Select Edit from your menu

5.      Select New Scheduled Scan

6.      Type a name for your scan, and a description of when it will scan the pc

PLEASE NOTE:  If you shut your PC down, the scan will not occur until you reboot.

How to Update your Virus Definitions

To prevent new strains of viruses from infecting your PC, you must update the software

1.      Start

2.      Programs

3.      Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition

           4.      Live Update Button, on the bottom right hand side, or select File, Live Update
